Even though the Johnson-Crapo bill has no future outside of the Senate, one thing is certain regarding Fannie and Freddie: the two will continue to earn a ton of money going forward.
GOP senators recently dispatched a letter to FHFA Director Mel Watt, countering a plea signed by 33 Democrats in January calling on the agency director to immediately authorize GSE funding to the National Housing Trust Fund and the Capital Magnet Fund.
In a heavily redacted draft memo released to the public, the Inspector General of FHFA found that while the agency had reviewed and examined the GSEs’ executive compensation, it did not keep close tabs on "non-executive senior professional compensation practices."
Public mention of the Treasury memo was first made earlier this month by former Solicitor General Ted Olson at a GSE shareholders rights advocacy forum in Washington.
Since Mel Watt was sworn into a five-year term as Federal Housing Finance Agency director on January 6, the former North Carolina Congressman has made no public appearances or policy statements except for canned comments attributed to him in routine FHFA press releases.
